EUROPEAN COMPUTER NETWORK FOR THE ARTS
AN INTRODUCTION
HISTORY
Since July 1993 Arts Professionals throughout Europe have been taking part
in an exciting project to create a European Computer Network for the Arts.
The network, currently called Arts on GreenNet, was initiated in the UK by
Dragan Klaic, (Director of the Netherlands Theatre Institute), GreenNet,
(a not-for-profit computer communications organisation specialising in
Non-Government organisations working in the areas of the environment,
development and peace) and Michael Jack.
In the course of one year the founding members of Arts on GreenNet have
grown to more than ninety. The membership consists of arts centres,
artists organisations, publications, information resources and individual
artists. Institutions such as the Institute for Contemporary Arts (UK),
Soros Centres for Contemporary Arts Network (Eastern Europe), Office
National de Diffusion Artistique (France), Informal European Theatre
Meeting, AMARC (Community Broadcasting Association Europe) and many
individual arts professionals are using Arts on GreenNet to communicate,
collaborate and create.
At the same time a representative sample of information sources have been
made available on-line for access by arts professionals around the globe.
Journals, databases and computer conferences represent just some of the
information that is becoming available to a wider audience than many arts
professionals ever thought possible.
In March 1994 Arts on GreenNet received Initial Phase funding for the
project from the Arts Council of England.
TODAY
The process of exchange and co-ordination, collective dialogue and debate
in the human arts networks has already increased creativity,
self-awareness and advancement of the arts. Most of this exchange has been
done through existing media such as face-to-face conferences, telephone
and fax.
Now however, the resources of email, computer conferencing, and networked
databases are offering arts professionals with a more efficient, cheaper
and quicker alternative that will prove to augment and improve on existing
means of communication.
Several hosts already provide computer communications to arts
professionals in Europe (European Jazz Network and ArtNet Holland),
however, until now there has been no computer network that:
* carries information and connects arts professional across all the
arts
* aims to use local hosts in all European countries
* is networked with the Internet, allowing e-mail exchange to most
networks in the world
Arts on GreenNet is now filling this gap. The proposed European Computer
Network for the Arts will provide co-ordinated development of the network
across all of Europe on a long term basis.
In January 1994 a Working Group in the UK was established to guide the
development of the network. They are:
Community Radio Association
Dance Services
The Data Place
Ian Stewart- Literature Department ACE
Institute of Contemporary Arts
International Visual Arts Information Network
International Workshop Festival
Jackie Friend - Freelance Arts Marketing Consultant
Live Art Magazine
London International Festival of Theatre
National Artists Association
National Campaign for the Arts
Touring Arts Office
AIMS OF THE NETWORK
1. INFORMATION AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
* provide arts professionals with computer communications across Europe
* provide easy access to useful information for arts professionals in
Europe
* promote the incorporation of information in all the languages of Europe
2. TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING AND SUPPORT
* develop specialised software specific to the European Computer Network
for the Arts that will make connection to the network easier and cheaper
3. OUTREACH
* support the development of regional arts hosts
* actively promote the establishment of an international network of arts
computer networks
STRATEGY
The immediate priorities of the Network are to:
* increase the amount of arts professionals online in Europe
* provide support and advice to those arts professionals
* train the arts professionals to use the network
* make available immediately useful information sources
* increase the technology available to arts professionals
* pursue funding for a Three Year Development Plan
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
Apart from joining Arts on GreenNet (see Arts on GreenNet newsletter) your
help is needed to create the European Computer Network for the Arts.
Arts on GreenNet will be seeking funding for a Three Year Development plan
from National, European, Commercial and Foundation funding sources. To get
this funding we must show that we have the support of arts professionals
throughout Europe.
If you would like to support the network please fill out the form below
and return it to Michael Jack at Arts on GreenNet:
